Curved and angular fence lines: designing beyond the straight run

Plots are not rectangles. Roads bend, rivers meander, hillsides fall away, and a boundary often follows a line agreed centuries ago. Fences, meanwhile, are usually sold in straight sections, and the standard advice is to make the site behave.
What happens when the fence wins
You have seen the results. A curved boundary chopped into a chain of straight panels with awkward wedges of dead land behind them. A gate placed where the mechanism can work rather than where the driveway wants it. A boundary that steps around a mature tree in a series of right angles because the system could do nothing else. None of this is a fencing problem. It is a geometry problem that most systems refuse to acknowledge.
Why a modular retracting system can follow the line
The system is built from sections that combine into runs of any length. The useful part is that standard linear sections can be combined with segments arranged along curves or in broken, angular layouts, so the fence line is shaped to the project rather than the other way around.

There is no continuous horizontal track demanding that the boundary stay straight, which is the constraint that defeats most systems on a curved site. Fix the gate first, because entrance geometry is the least flexible element on the drawing, and set everything else out from it. Treat curves as segmented: a smooth curve is delivered as a sequence of short chords, and the visual quality depends on segment length, so decide that at design stage rather than on site. Coordinate the chambers early, since on a non-linear layout the setting out of chambers is the item most likely to be discovered late. And confirm the available options with the manufacturer before the drawing is fixed, because curved and angular configurations are project specific.
The design payoff
A fence that follows the site stops reading as a fence and starts reading as an edge. It follows the same lines as the paths and the planting, and it does not leave triangles of land that nobody will ever use. When the gate is open, the line is simply a clean run of ground.
