Winter-proof construction. Why does Fancy Fence require no snow removal?

Winter is the ultimate test of whether a gate truly delivers, as there are many potential problems: a sliding gate with a snow-filled guide rail, gate wings blocked by snow and ice, manual snow clearing before leaving home at dawn. These scenarios unfortunately repeat themselves in many households. Fancy Fence automatic gates are designed precisely to avoid these problems.

Comparison with the winter operation of traditional gates

In a climate where winters bring frost and snow, these conditions cannot be overlooked when designing a driveway entrance. Otherwise, the investor ends up with a solution that works perfectly in summer but becomes a source of frustration just a few months later. What limitations do classic solutions have, and why do fences with a lowering system often prove to be the better choice?

A sliding gate moves along a rail running on the ground. In winter, snow, mud, and ice can accumulate on the travel path, blocking the panel's movement. Users therefore have an additional obligation: keeping the guide rail clear, regardless of how advanced the drive system is.

A swing gate can also cause problems in winter. The wing moves just above the ground surface, so heavy snowfall, especially combined with severe frost and icing, can effectively block it.

The Fancy Fence electric gate operates vertically, with the mechanism concealed underground. The weatherproof underground gate "emerges" from the ground and retracts back into it after opening. There is no guide rail or components that can freeze. A cover protects the mechanism from direct contact with snow and ice. In February, you open the gate just as you would in summer, no snow clearing, no lengthy preparations.

Waterproofing of underground gates

The key to reliable winter operation is protecting the mechanism. The housing in which it operates is watertight, designed so that water, melting snow, and mud do not interfere with the system's performance. The system is equipped with a drainage pump that protects the mechanism from flooding. The general principle is straightforward: the better the sealing and drainage of the housing, the fewer additional protective measures the installation requires. High housing quality, proper levelling, and effective drainage of the area around the system are all critical factors for a trouble-free installation.

Performance testing: from -23°C to +40°C

Fancy Fence automatic gates have been tested in the extreme temperatures that can occur across the European continent. The system operates reliably within a range of -23°C to +40°C — values that have been documented through controlled engineering tests. This means the gates can perform equally well in Scandinavia and in Mediterranean climates. Just as important as the temperature range is the system's resistance to adverse weather conditions.

As real-world confirmation, last winter in Poland put Fancy Fence retractable gates to the test. For the first time in several years, Poland experienced heavy snowfall and persistently low temperatures, with snow remaining on the streets for approximately two months. Throughout this period, owners of Fancy Fence retractable gates had no issues entering or leaving their properties. This is thanks to the mechanism being installed underground, where it is not exposed to freezing. This kind of field-proven performance in demanding real-world conditions is perhaps the best recommendation of all.

Maintenance in cold climates and sandy environments

Questions about maintenance in harsh weather conditions arise regularly, both from investors in regions with severe winters and from clients living in coastal properties. Below you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions.

How often does the system require servicing in winter?

The Fancy Fence maintenance schedule does not change seasonally. Fences with a lowering system require no complex winter preparations, as they operate in exactly the same way throughout the year. Details regarding gate operation and maintenance are discussed individually with each client during the design stage.

Can sand and dust damage the mechanism?

The key mechanical components of the system operate inside a reinforced concrete housing, beneath protective covers, which shields them from contaminants. In environments with exceptionally high dust levels, this topic is addressed during the consultation, with the design adapted to local conditions.

What about ice on the driveway surface?

The Fancy Fence electric gate does not require ice removal from the driveway in order to operate. An icy driveway surface does not block the system, the panel rises vertically from the ground regardless of the surface condition.

Does a coastal installation require additional anti-corrosion protection?

Absolutely, this is worth keeping in mind if you opt for a metal fence. The choice of appropriate material and its protective treatment are agreed individually with clients at the quotation stage. It is worth describing the location in detail from the very first contact with our team. We use a variety of panel infills, not only metal ones. Available options include wood, tempered glass, and materials supplied by the investor.

More answers to questions about operating Fancy Fence in various climatic conditions can be found in the FAQ section.

A weatherproof underground gate that performs reliably even in winter eliminates the need to choose between aesthetics and dependability in challenging conditions. It is a system designed with both factors in mind from the very start.
